  Salvation

"What Must I Do To Be Saved?"

The Phillipian Jailor of Acts 16 asked this profound question in unwavering faith after he had just seen God in action aiding Paul and Silas. These two men, he knew, must surely know what was acceptable in God's eyes. We read that "..they spake unto him the word of the Lord and all that were in his house."

If we are not already a child of God we should all ask ourselves, "What must I do to be saved?".

What does the Bible say?

To answer this question we choose to go to the Bible. We do not want to go to other people because there is always the risk of a person's thoughts being interjected to what they believe to be the truth. One who is concerned about New Testament Christianity can only be safe when they rely on the New Testament. Here are some of Jesus' commands and other places where salvation is discussed in the New Testament.

First you must HEAR the Gospel.

Romans 10:17 So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.

After you hear the Gospel, you must BELIEVE the Gospel.

John 20:30-31 And many other signs truly did Jesus in the presence of his disciples, which are not written in this book: But these are written, that ye might believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing ye might have life through his name
Romans 1:16 For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek.
Acts 18:8 And Crispus, the chief ruler of the synagogue, believed on the Lord with all his house; and many of the Corinthians hearing believed, and were baptized.
Hebrews 11:6 But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.

Then you must REPENT (turn away from) the sins in your life.

Luke 13:3 I tell you, Nay: but, except ye repent, ye shall all likewise perish.
Luke 24:47 And that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in his name among all nations, beginning at Jerusalem.
Acts 3:19 Repent ye therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out, when the times of refreshing shall come from the presence of the Lord;
Acts 17:30 And the times of this ignorance God winked at; but now commandeth all men every where to repent:

You must also CONFESS before men that you believe Jesus is the son of the living God.

Matthew 10:32 Whosoever therefore shall confess me before men, him will I confess also before my Father which is in heaven.
Matthew16:16 And Simon Peter answered and said, Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God.
Acts 8:37 And Philip said, If thou believest with all thine heart, thou mayest. And he answered and said, I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God.
Romans 10:10 For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.

After the above steps have been taken it is time to be BAPTIZED (immersed) for the remission of sins.

Matthew 28:19 Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost:
Mark 16:16 He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned.
Acts 2:38 Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.
Acts 10:47-48 Can any man forbid water, that these should not be baptized, which have received the Holy Ghost as well as we? And he commanded them to be baptized in the name of the Lord. Then prayed they him to tarry certain days.
Acts 22:16 And now why tarriest thou? arise, and be baptized, and wash away thy sins, calling on the name of the Lord.
Romans 6:3-4 Know ye not, that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death? Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life.
Galatians 3:27 For as many of you as have been baptized into Christ have put on Christ.
Colossians 2:12 Buried with him in baptism, wherein also ye are risen with him through the faith of the operation of God, who hath raised him from the dead.
I Peter 3:21 The like figure whereunto even baptism doth also now save us (not the putting away of the filth of the flesh, but the answer of a good conscience toward God,) by the resurrection of Jesus Christ:

Last, but certainly not least, you must continue FAITHFUL unto death.

Matthew 25:21 His lord said unto him, Well done, thou good and faithful servant: thou hast been faithful over a few things, I will make thee ruler over many things: enter thou into the joy of thy lord.
2 Peter 1:1 Simon Peter, a servant and an apostle of Jesus Christ, to them that have obtained like precious faith with us through the righteousness of God and our Saviour Jesus Christ:
Revelation 2:10 ...be thou faithful unto death, and I will give thee a crown of life.
